The divergent series brings you into a new world, the world of Tris. She is a strong sixteen-year-old girl who hates showing weakness. Tris was born in the faction Abnegation. the faction that cultivates the virtue of selflessness in the future city of Chicago. Tris never fully learned to willingly follow their faction’s virtues. She was often overshadowed by her brother’s apparent selflessness and often found herself thinking about what she wants. This futuristic society it is divided into five factions total. Among the Abnegation faction there is, Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), Erudite (the intelligent), and Candor (the honest). As each person enters adulthood they must choose a faction and commit to it for life. To everyone’s surprise Tris chooses to join Dauntless. This society pursues bravery above all else. During her initiation she realizes that she is a Divergent. This means she shows equal attributes of multiple factions and will never be able to fit into just one.
The first important scene is the Choosing Ceremony where she picks what she wants to devote herself to for the rest of her life. As the new adults are called up one by one Tris is clueless as to what she wants to pick. Her brother goes first and chooses Erudite or the intelligence. Tris is called next and slowly makes her way to the front of the stage. She hovers over the five bowls and drops her blood into the Dauntless one. From this point on she must be brave and fearless. After the ceremony they split up into their new factions. One of the leaders Eric gets up and explains the first task and says “if you don’t have the guts to jump then you don’t belong to Dauntless”. The catch is no one knows what’s at the bottom of the building because they are jumping into what looks like a black hole and there could be anything waiting at the bottom. He says that someone has to jump first and asks who it’s going to be. After silence Tris says “me”. She steps up and jumps. Luckily at the bottom there is a net to catch her fall. She is the first one welcomed into Dauntless.
When thinking about connecting Divergent to Marxism the first word that relates back to it is “hegemony”. Marx explains that it is like a “social control which makes certain views seem ‘natural’ or invisible so that they hardly seem like views at all, just ‘the way things are’” (Barry, 158). In other words its leadership or dominance, especially by one country or social group over others would be someone who is Divergent, like Tris. The hegemony is the five different factions in Divergent. Since this is a fictional futuristic world it’s normal to split up the society, it’s just the way things work. The second word is Ideology. Marx goes on to explain that groupings such as “political parties, schools, the media, churches, the family, and art” all foster an ideology (Barry, 158). In other words it is “a set of ideas and attitudes” (Barry, 158). In the world that Tris lives in these “political parties” that Marx talks about are the factions. Everyone is in their own group with their own ideas and attitudes.
Feminism is another framework that is very relevant in the Divergent series. Tris is a very strong women who continues to prove she’s just as good as anyone else in the faction. Choosing Dauntless, she proves out of the gate that she is tough. The faction doesn’t judge based on gender; instead, Tris is thrown into the same death-defying challenges as her male equivalents. Tris chooses to use her unique status as Divergent to fight for something bigger than herself. She dedicates herself to a cause, and ultimately sacrifices herself for it.
The second important scene which relates back to feminism is when Tris’s mother (Mrs. Prior) shows up to help her, revealing her own combat training. The mother/daughter duo then shoot their way out of a treacherous situation together. This is showing two strong women working together to get out of a very dangerous situation. They are proving that women can work together just as well as men work together to fight and protect themselves. Without her mother’s help she would have never been able to escape and most likely would have died. Unfortunately her mother doesn’t make it out alive but due to her sacrifice but Tris is able to keep fighting and move forward. Mrs. Prior’s sacrifice was not out of a desire to die, but a desire to protect her daughter’s life. It was the ultimate expression of bravery and love, she cared more about her loved ones rather than her faction.
A “new heroine” describes Tris because she is someone who no one in their world thought would be anything. She was just a regular girl with a hidden secret which she had to hide throughout the series. She has the most power over anyone due to being Divergent but she just wants to be Dauntless with everyone else. No matter how hard she tries to hide it, it doesn’t stop people from seeing signs of divergent and getting suspicious. She is a heroine because she was fearless and brave when it came to choosing a faction. Dauntless is not meant for everyone and she decided to put herself out there ultimately putting her life on the line. She shows her great power which reflects back on feminism throughout the story-line giving girls someone to look up to.
